Before we dive in

Last month, we argued that AI’s biggest battleground was shifting from raw capability to efficiency. This month, that picture became more geopolitical…

Chinese labs are advancing on two different fronts. Moonshot’s Kimi K3 is a 2.8-trillion-parameter model with a one-million-token context window, and independent testing places it alongside several leading proprietary models on a range of reasoning and agentic tasks. DeepSeek’s V4 Pro and Flash models combine competitive performance with first-party API prices that remain substantially below those of leading U.S. frontier models.

At the same time, policy is making model choice more strategic. The U.S. continues to restrict exports of advanced computing hardware to certain Chinese entities and China-linked recipients. China is reportedly considering restrictions on overseas access to its most advanced AI models and model weights, but no final measures have been announced.

Our take for founders: model selection is becoming part of infrastructure strategy. The decision now touches cost, performance, deployment options, customer procurement, compliance exposure, and the ability to switch providers if the economics or regulatory environment change.
